Morning Determinations !

Waking up this morning, I smile.
Twenty-four brand-new hours are before me.
I vow to live fully each moment
and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion..

Thich Nhat Hanh ( From Peace is Every Breath )

What a nice determination to make every morning !

Thích Nhất Hạnh born October 11, 1926 is a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist. He lives in the Plum Village Monastery in the Dordogne region in the South of France, traveling internationally to give retreats and talks. He coined the term “Engaged Buddhism” in his book Vietnam: Lotus in a Sea of Fire.

A long-term exile, he was given permission to make his first return trip to Vietnam in 2005.

Nhất Hạnh has published more than 100 books, including more than 40 in English. Nhat Hanh is active in the peace movement, promoting non-violent solutions to conflict.

Is Faith a Gift or an Act ?

For some faith comes naturally. For others it has to be deliberately acquired – delivered by despair, perhaps…

What about you ?

My friend Jug ( he doesn’t know it, yet :- ) ) tries to put it well. .. excerpted from :

http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/jugglebandhi/entry/faith-as-spiritual-homeopathy#comments

==============

So why seek this elusive faith that you don’t believe in, that you don’t have faith in, in the first place?

You only seek faith when in desperation you are driven to faith by the opposite of faith, which is despair. Despair is like a bad attack of spiritual sciatica, an unbearably painful condition brought on by an overwhelming sense that not just your particular life, or human life in general, but the working of the universe itself is totally devoid of meaning. Despair can be caused by any number of factors: the devastating loss of a loved one, the post-traumatic stress of a life-threatening experience.

For most, faith is not a gift, it is an act. An act of will, an act of choice to overcome despair. Act as if you have faith – try meditation techniques, participate in bhajans, or other spiritual or religious rituals and disciplines – and hope that faith will follow. Pascal called spiritual faith a gamble, a wager, in which if you lost you lost nothing, because you had nothing to begin with, but if you won, you won infinite riches. So try the gamble. Because – as with homeopathy – what have you got to lose? Nothing but the anguish of despair.

A GREAT Worldview and a GREAT Song !

“The world is what you make of it. “

– Someone Somewhere : -)

Actually, many people seem to have said it.. one of my favorite goes :

Stella: The world is what you make of it, friend. If it doesn’t fit, you make alterations.

Paden: I’ll drink to that.

– Dialogue from Silverado

AND here is a REALLY NICE song which says the same thing !!

Lyrics for all to enjoi more :

I knew this African called Hannibal
Rock it roll it send it down the avenue
Went out to see the Roman Empire fall
Uh huh? uh huh?

Two thousand elephants in gold chain-mail
Take it, shake it, make it what you wanna be
Them Roman legionnaires they hit the trail
Uh huh?

The world is what you make it
The world is what you make it

When Cleopatra ruled in Egypt’s land
Jump down, turn around, look at what the monkey did
She went to find herself a mighty man
Uh huh? uh huh?

In come Antonio from Italy
Haul it, ball it, drag it up the pyramid,
He never knew how hot a girl could be
Uh huh?

The world is what you make it
The world is what you make it baby
The world is what you make it

Don’t start to hit me with your “no can do”
Bluesin’, losin’, workin’ up an attitude
Clean up them windows let the sun shine through
Uh huh? uh huh?

There ain’t no happy time without no pain
heartbreak, new date, move on up the alleyway
Pick up them pieces hit the road again
Uh huh?

The world is what you make it
The world is what you make it baby
The world is what you make it

TOTD 17th April 2013 : Misfortune and one’s mouth

“Misfortune comes from one’s mouth and ruins one, but fortune comes from one’s heart and makes one worthy of respect.”

– The New Year’s Gosho – Nichiren Diashonin

The complete passage is simply GREAT .. it reads :

First of all, as to the question of where exactly hell and the Buddha exist, one sutra states that hell exists underground, and another sutra says that the Buddha is in the west. Closer examination, however, reveals that both exist in our five-foot body. This must be true because hell is in the heart of a person who inwardly despises his father and disregards his mother. It is like the lotus seed, which contains both blossom and fruit. In the same way, the Buddha dwells within our hearts. For example, flint has the potential to produce fire, and gems have intrinsic value. We ordinary people can see neither our own eyelashes, which are so close, nor the heavens in the distance. Likewise, we do not see that the Buddha exists in our own hearts. You may question how it is that the Buddha can reside within us when our bodies, originating from our parents’ sperm and blood, are the source of the three poisons and the seat of carnal desires. But repeated consideration assures us of the truth of this matter. The pure lotus flower blooms out of the muddy pond, the fragrant sandalwood grows from the soil, the graceful cherry blossoms come forth from trees, the beautiful Yang Kuei-fei was born of a woman of low station, and the moon rises from behind the mountains to shed light on them. Misfortune comes from one’s mouth and ruins one, but fortune comes from one’s heart and makes one worthy of respect

Does Failure Liberate ?

“Rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

J. K. Rowling

Seven years after graduating from university, Rowling saw herself as “the biggest failure I knew.” Her marriage had failed, she was jobless with a dependent child, but she described her failure as liberating:

” Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy to finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area where I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter, and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

– J. K. Rowling, “The fringe benefits of failure”, 2008.

And Now :

  • In 2004, Forbes named Rowling as the first person to become a U.S.-dollar billionaire by writing books, the second-richest female entertainer and the 1,062nd richest person in the world.
  • In February 2013 she was assessed as the 13th most powerful woman in the United Kingdom by Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.

Any lessons there ? DO share !

On Mind and Belief

I would rather have a mind opened by wonder than one closed by belief.

–  Gerry Spence

Gerald Spence (born January 8, 1929) is an American trial lawyer, widely recognized as one of the greatest trial lawyers of all time. Spence states that he “has never lost a criminal case either as a prosecutor or a defense attorney. He has not lost a civil case since 1969.Spence did lose a criminal case in a bench trial but prevailed on appeal.

Spence gained attention for the Karen Silkwood case.Karen Silkwood was a chemical technician at the Kerr-McGee plutonium-production plant, where she became an activist and vocal critic of plant safety, what would now be known as a whistleblower. On November 13, 1974, Silkwood died in a fatal one-car crash under suspicious circumstances after reportedly gathering evidence for her union. Spence represented Silkwood’s father and children, who charged that Kerr–McGee was responsible for exposing Silkwood to dangerous levels of radiation. Spence won a $10.5 million verdict for the family.

In civil litigation, Spence won a $52 million verdict against McDonald’s Corporation on behalf of a small, family-owned ice cream company.A medical malpractice verdict of over $4 million established a new standard for nursing care in Utah. In 1992 Spence earned $33.5 million verdicts for emotional and punitive damages for his quadriplegic client, after a major insurance company refused to pay on the $50,000 policy.
